About the euro and the Indian rupee
The euro (EUR) is managed by the European Central Bank and is the second most traded currency in the world after the US dollar. It was launched in 1999, and euro notes and coins entered circulation in 2002.
There is little direct trading between euros and rupees, so EUR to INR is effectively worked out through the dollar: it reflects both the euro–dollar rate and the dollar–rupee rate. The pair can therefore move even on days when the rupee is steady against the dollar.
What moves the EUR to INR rate?
- ECB policy: higher euro-area interest rates tend to support the euro against the rupee.
- The euro–dollar rate: a rising EUR/USD usually pulls EUR/INR up with it.
- RBI policy and Indian inflation: these drive the rupee side of the pair.
- Energy prices and growth in Europe: weak growth or costly energy imports can weigh on the euro.
Who needs the EUR to INR rate?
Indian students paying tuition and living costs in Europe, tourists planning a Schengen trip, exporters invoicing European buyers and professionals working in the euro area all watch this rate. For large payments such as university fees, even a small difference in the rate can change the rupee cost noticeably.
Why your bank’s rate is different
The converter shows the mid-market rate – the midpoint between the buying and selling prices on the global currency market. Banks, card networks, exchange counters and money transfer apps add their own margin to that rate, and many charge a fixed fee as well. Before you transfer, compare the total amount the recipient will get, not just the advertised rate.
