About the Omani rial and the Indian rupee

The Omani rial (OMR) is issued by the Central Bank of Oman and is divided into 1,000 baisa. It has been pegged to the US dollar since 1986 at a rate of about 2.6008 dollars per rial.

The peg means OMR to INR follows the dollar: multiply the USD to INR rate by roughly 2.6 and you get the rial rate. Only the Kuwaiti dinar and the Bahraini dinar have a higher face value.

What moves the OMR to INR rate?

  • USD/INR: the rial is fixed to the dollar, so the dollar–rupee rate drives the pair.
  • Oil and gas income: energy revenue supports Oman’s reserves and its currency peg.
  • RBI policy: interest rates and intervention in India move the rupee.
  • India’s trade balance: a larger import bill tends to weaken the rupee against Gulf currencies.

Sending money from Oman to India

Indians make up the largest expatriate community in Oman, with long-established ties in trade, construction, healthcare and education. Exchange houses in Muscat, Salalah and Sohar publish their own OMR to INR rates each day, and comparing two or three of them before a transfer is worthwhile.

Mid-market rate vs the rate you get

No bank or exchange company trades with customers at the exact mid-market rate. Each provider sets a buying rate and a selling rate around it and keeps the difference as its margin, sometimes with a separate transfer fee. The fairest way to compare services is to ask how much will arrive after every charge.

Usually not exactly. The figure shown is the mid-market reference rate. Banks and transfer services apply their own customer rates, which include a margin and sometimes extra fees.
