About the US dollar and the Bangladeshi taka
The Bangladeshi taka (BDT) is issued by Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank. In recent years Bangladesh has moved from a tightly managed dollar rate towards a more market-based system, which allows the taka to adjust more freely to supply and demand.
Dollars flow into Bangladesh mainly through ready-made garment exports and remittances from workers abroad. When those inflows are strong the taka is steadier, and when the import bill grows faster the dollar becomes more expensive.
What moves the USD to BDT rate?
- Garment exports: the clothing industry earns the largest share of Bangladesh’s export dollars.
- Remittances: money sent by Bangladeshis working in the Gulf, Malaysia, the UK and the US adds to dollar supply.
- Fuel and commodity imports: higher global prices increase demand for dollars.
- Bangladesh Bank policy and reserves: the central bank’s reserves and exchange-rate rules shape the market rate.
Who uses the USD to BDT rate?
Exporters, importers, freelancers on international marketplaces and families receiving money from abroad all need the dollar rate. Banks and mobile financial services each apply their own rate, and remittances sent through official channels may also qualify for a government cash incentive, so check the total taka you will receive.
Why your bank’s rate is different
The converter shows the mid-market rate – the midpoint between the buying and selling prices on the global currency market. Banks, card networks, exchange counters and money transfer apps add their own margin to that rate, and many charge a fixed fee as well. Before you transfer, compare the total amount the recipient will get, not just the advertised rate.
