About the US dollar and the Sri Lankan rupee

The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The currency was allowed to float freely in March 2022 during the country’s economic crisis, and it lost a large part of its value against the dollar in the weeks that followed.

Since then, an IMF-supported reform programme, a recovery in tourism and steadier remittances have helped the rupee stabilise. The exchange rate is now market-determined, with banks quoting their own buying and selling rates each day.

What moves the USD to LKR rate?

  • Tourism earnings: visitor arrivals bring in dollars and support the rupee.
  • Worker remittances: money sent home by Sri Lankans abroad is a key source of foreign exchange.
  • Exports of tea and apparel: stronger export income improves dollar supply.
  • Debt repayments and reserves: external debt payments and the level of central bank reserves influence confidence.

Who uses the USD to LKR rate?

Hotels and tour operators pricing in dollars, apparel and tea exporters, IT freelancers, importers and families receiving remittances all track this rate. Travellers also use it to budget for a trip. Licensed banks and money changers in Sri Lanka set their own rates, so compare before exchanging larger amounts.

Why the rate you receive is lower

The mid-market rate is a reference point, not a retail price. Providers build their profit into the rate they quote and may add service fees or taxes on top. A “zero fee” offer with a poor rate can cost more than a small fee with a rate close to the one shown here, so always compare the final amount.

Usually not exactly. The figure shown is the mid-market reference rate. Banks and transfer services apply their own customer rates, which include a margin and sometimes extra fees.
