About the Saudi riyal and the Indian rupee
The Saudi riyal (SAR) is issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA). It has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.75 riyals per dollar since 1986, which makes it one of the most stable currencies in the Gulf.
As a result, SAR to INR follows the dollar almost exactly: divide the USD to INR rate by 3.75 and you have the riyal rate. Daily changes in the pair come from the rupee, not from the riyal.
What moves the SAR to INR rate?
- USD/INR movements: the riyal is tied to the dollar, so a stronger dollar means more rupees per riyal.
- Oil market: oil income funds Saudi Arabia’s reserves and keeps the peg secure, while higher oil prices put pressure on the rupee.
- Indian interest rates and inflation: these shape investor demand for the rupee.
- Global risk sentiment: in nervous markets investors favour the dollar, which lifts the riyal against the rupee too.
Sending money from Saudi Arabia to India
Saudi Arabia hosts one of the largest Indian communities abroad, and remittances from the Kingdom support many households in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and other states. Banks and remittance centres set their own SAR to INR rates, so check both the rate and the transfer fee before you choose a service.
Why the rate you receive is lower
The mid-market rate is a reference point, not a retail price. Providers build their profit into the rate they quote and may add service fees or taxes on top. A “zero fee” offer with a poor rate can cost more than a small fee with a rate close to the one shown here, so always compare the final amount.
