About the Kuwaiti dinar and the Indian rupee

The Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) is issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait and is divided into 1,000 fils. One dinar is worth more than three US dollars, which makes it the most valuable currency unit in the world.

Unlike most Gulf currencies, the dinar is not pegged to the US dollar alone. Since 2007 it has been linked to an undisclosed basket of major currencies, so KWD to INR can move slightly differently from AED, SAR or QAR against the rupee.

What moves the KWD to INR rate?

  • The currency basket: the dinar follows a weighted mix of major currencies in which the US dollar plays a large part.
  • Oil revenue: oil exports fund Kuwait’s reserves and underpin the dinar’s strength.
  • The dollar–rupee rate: when the rupee weakens against the dollar, it usually weakens against the dinar too.
  • RBI policy and flows into India: these set the direction of the rupee.

Sending money from Kuwait to India

Indians form the largest expatriate community in Kuwait, working in healthcare, engineering, retail, oil and domestic services. Exchange companies in Kuwait compete closely on the KWD to INR rate, and the difference between providers on a single dinar can add up over a monthly salary transfer.

Mid-market rate vs the rate you get

No bank or exchange company trades with customers at the exact mid-market rate. Each provider sets a buying rate and a selling rate around it and keeps the difference as its margin, sometimes with a separate transfer fee. The fairest way to compare services is to ask how much will arrive after every charge.
