About the Qatari riyal and the Indian rupee
The Qatari riyal (QAR) is issued by the Qatar Central Bank. It has been officially pegged to the US dollar at 3.64 riyals per dollar since 2001, supported by the country’s large natural gas exports.
With the riyal fixed to the dollar, the QAR to INR rate equals the USD to INR rate divided by 3.64. That also means one Qatari riyal is worth slightly more than one UAE dirham or one Saudi riyal.
What moves the QAR to INR rate?
- USD/INR: the dollar–rupee rate explains almost all day-to-day movement in QAR/INR.
- Gas and oil revenue: energy exports give Qatar the reserves to maintain its peg.
- Indian monetary policy: RBI rate decisions and intervention shape the rupee.
- Global demand for dollars: a stronger dollar worldwide lifts the riyal against the rupee.
Sending money from Qatar to India
Indians are the largest expatriate group in Qatar and send money home regularly through exchange houses, banks and mobile apps. Rates are usually best on larger transfers, and some providers trade a better rate for a higher fee, so always check the total rupees received.
Why the rate you receive is lower
The mid-market rate is a reference point, not a retail price. Providers build their profit into the rate they quote and may add service fees or taxes on top. A “zero fee” offer with a poor rate can cost more than a small fee with a rate close to the one shown here, so always compare the final amount.
