About the US dollar and the Nepalese rupee

The Nepalese rupee (NPR) is issued by Nepal Rastra Bank. Its value is pegged to the Indian rupee at a fixed rate of 1.6 Nepalese rupees to 1 Indian rupee, an arrangement that has been in place since 1993.

Because of this peg, the dollar rate in Nepal follows the dollar rate in India. Multiply the USD to INR rate by 1.6 and you get a figure very close to USD to NPR. When the Indian rupee weakens against the dollar, the Nepalese rupee weakens by the same proportion.

What moves the USD to NPR rate?

  • The Indian rupee: with the NPR fixed to the INR, USD/INR movements pass straight through to USD/NPR.
  • RBI and US Federal Reserve policy: interest rate decisions in India and the US move the dollar–rupee rate.
  • Oil prices: costlier crude tends to weaken the Indian rupee and therefore the Nepalese rupee.
  • Nepal Rastra Bank rates: the central bank publishes daily buying and selling rates that banks use as a reference.

Who uses the USD to NPR rate?

Remittances from Nepalis working abroad are a major part of Nepal’s economy, so the dollar rate matters to a large share of households. Tourism businesses, importers and students going overseas also rely on it. Banks and money transfer operators in Nepal quote separate buying and selling rates around the reference rate.

Mid-market rate vs the rate you get

No bank or exchange company trades with customers at the exact mid-market rate. Each provider sets a buying rate and a selling rate around it and keeps the difference as its margin, sometimes with a separate transfer fee. The fairest way to compare services is to ask how much will arrive after every charge.
